Managing Teenage Menstrual Cycles

MU has never had a normal cycle since her periods started.  Periods would come every 7 – 10 days, were very heavy and painful.  She was very emotional and tearful, would have to take lots of time off of school because the pain was so bad.  She had a bad temper and was quite snappy.

I saw this 15-year-old girl for three months, and only five times.  After the first treatment, two weeks later, she came back and said she hadn’t had a period now for three weeks.  This was different, as she could never tell when she would bleed, but it would usually be every 7 – 10 days.   She was beginning to get cramps and had cramps in her legs.

The third time I saw her she told me her period started on day 30.  The first time ever her cycle was a normal length.  It was still heavy and still painful, but she was happy to have had a break from the unpredictable bleeding.

The next appointment, treatment four, her cycle length was 31 days.  Another “normal” length, again,  she was happy not to have been surprised by a short cycle.  She said it was less painful and she had no leg cramps.

The last time I saw her she’d had another good month, a slightly shorter cycle, but still within what a normal cycle length should be,  she started her period on day 27.  She’s had less time off school; her dad was really pleased, as she wasn’t so tearful.

As she had done so well, we agreed that she could be discharged,  she knows she is very welcome to come back should her periods be come irregular again.

My daughter was suffering from sever migraines that would happen without warning, she would go blind in her left eye.   The migraines would last for up to 4 days.  Liz asked when these migraines would happen and we realised that they were happening when Lily was either mid cycle or having her period.

One of my work colleagues suggested the Aston Clinic as she had been there for different symptoms; she said we should give it a go.

We were introduced to Liz just over three months ago and we haven’t looked back.  She made Lily and myself feel at ease straight away. And always explained everything before she did anything.

Liz used NAET testing and found three things that Lily was sensitive to: sugar, sweeteners and hormones.   She suggested Lily have acupuncture as she thought it would really help her.  Lily is frightened of needles, but Liz talked her through it, putting her at ease.  She never used more than five needles.

We attended the clinic every two weeks and almost immediately noticed improvements.

Lily had had some diarrhoea during one of her periods; Liz explained that she thought that this was her body trying to rid itself of the stagnation that was causing the migraines.  She had no further diarrhoea and most importantly, she hasn’t had a migraine since October.

It has only taken a few short months and Lily is really seeing the benefits, thanks to Liz.  She was amazing throughout Lily’s treatment, by being so friendly and welcoming to us both.  I would highly recommend her to anyone who was thinking about giving acupuncture a go.
