Who is the Foundation Course for?

You don’t need previous experience in Kinesiology or complementary therapy to join the Foundation Course. It may be right for you if you:

  • Are curious about Kinesiology and want to learn the fundamentals

  • Would like to develop practical skills you can use with yourself, friends and family

  • Are already working as a complementary or wellbeing practitioner and would like to add Kinesiology to your existing skills

  • Are considering developing your knowledge of Kinesiology further

  • Enjoy learning in a practical, interactive environment

Course structure

The Foundation Course consists of 90 hours of face-to-face training, delivered across six modules. Alongside the taught sessions, students should allow approximately 1–2 hours per week for home study and practice, as well as completing the required case studies.

The course includes a final assessment and certification in accordance with the requirements of the Kinesiology Association. For existing practitioners, Kinesiology can provide an additional perspective and a new set of practical tools to bring into their work.

What will you learn?

A thorough grounding in manual muscle response testing, with practical demonstrations, opportunities to practise and guidance as you develop your skills.

  • Introduction to manual muscle response testing

  • The key principles and concepts of Kinesiology

  • Testing and balancing 42 muscles

  • Food sensitivity and nutritional testing

  • Emotional stress-release techniques

  • Structural balance techniques

  • An introduction to meridian energies and working with them

  • A range of additional Foundation-level Kinesiology techniques

The emphasis throughout the course is on practical learning. You’ll be shown each technique, have the opportunity to practise it yourself and receive guidance as you develop your skills.

Six modules of practical learning

The KA Foundation Course is delivered over six modules, giving you time between sessions to practise and consolidate what you’ve learned. Each module combines teaching, demonstration and practical work, allowing you to develop your skills progressively.

Module 1

Getting started with Kinesiology

An introduction to Kinesiology, manual muscle response testing and the fundamental principles you’ll need throughout the course.

Module 2

Developing your muscle-testing skills

Building on the foundations from Module 1, you’ll develop greater confidence and consistency with muscle testing and begin to work with the Foundation techniques in a practical setting.

Module 3

Building your practical toolkit

You’ll continue to develop your understanding of the muscular system and introduce further Foundation techniques, including nutritional testing.

Module 4

Developing your understanding

You’ll explore further structural and energetic aspects of Kinesiology and expand your practical toolkit.

Module 5

Bringing techniques together

You’ll explore emotional stress-release techniques and begin to bring together the different approaches you’ve learned throughout the course.

Module 6

Consolidating your Foundation skills

The final module brings together the knowledge and practical skills developed throughout the course, with assessment and an opportunity to consider where you would like to take your Kinesiology training next.

The detailed content of each module follows the current Kinesiology Association Foundation syllabus.

A hands-on approach to learning

Kinesiology is a practical skill, so you’ll spend a significant amount of your training actually working with the techniques. Classes combine:

Explanation

Understanding the principles behind what you’re learning.

Demonstration

Seeing techniques performed clearly before you try them yourself.

Practical

Working with your fellow students and developing your confidence through practice.

Discussion

Having the opportunity to ask questions, explore what you’re learning and learn from the experiences of the group.

I want you to leave each module feeling that you’ve genuinely learned something, practised it and understood how to use it, rather than simply having sat through a day of teaching.

Your course includes

  • 90 hours of face-to-face Foundation training

  • Comprehensive KA Foundation course materials

  • Practical training in manual muscle response testing

  • Training in the 42 Foundation muscles

  • Nutritional testing materials

  • Practical demonstrations and supervised workshop time

  • Assessment and Foundation certification

  • Kinesiology Association Foundation-level membership, subject to the current KA arrangements

Kinesiology Foundation alongside Anatomy & Physiology

A good understanding of Anatomy & Physiology provides an important foundation for anyone developing their skills in Kinesiology. You do not need to have completed Anatomy & Physiology before joining the Foundation Course. However, if you would like to progress beyond Foundation level and continue your training towards KA Diploma-level Kinesiology, you will need to hold an ITEC Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology qualification.

This is one of the reasons I offer both courses. My ITEC Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology course gives you a thorough understanding of the structure and function of the human body, while the KA Kinesiology Foundation Course allows you to develop practical Kinesiology skills through hands-on learning.

The two courses are separate, but they complement each other extremely well. If you are considering progressing through to Diploma-level Kinesiology, completing both with me gives you a natural pathway from understanding the body to developing practical Kinesiology skills.

Where can Foundation take you?

The Foundation Course provides a solid starting point for anyone wanting to develop their understanding of Kinesiology further. For those who decide they would like to continue their training, the Foundation level forms part of the progression route into further KA Kinesiology training. For existing practitioners, it can also provide an opportunity to explore how Kinesiology may complement their existing professional skills.

Your tutor – Liz Xerri

I have worked in complementary health for around 30 years, beginning with aromatherapy, reflexology and massage before moving into acupuncture and, later, Kinesiology. Teaching has always been an important part of my work. I have taught Anatomy & Physiology and complementary therapies in further education and have a Cert Ed, as well as many years of experience working with students. My own Kinesiology training has taken me through to Diploma level, and I particularly enjoy the practical and investigative nature of the discipline.

A relaxed, hands-on environment

My teaching style is relaxed, interactive and hands-on. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, practising new skills and learning from one another. Small groups allow plenty of opportunity for individual guidance and discussion. The course is taught from my peaceful garden clinic, creating a relaxed environment in which you can concentrate on learning and developing your skills.
